Task 2: Add Zones to Your Floorplan

Follow this procedure to add zones to your floorplan.

Zones are necessary to create rules for events and alerts that are location-dependent. For instance, when someone presses a button to trigger a replenishment request on an asset affixed to a tag, or when a person presses a button to alert the system to a person-down situation. In both instances the location of the asset or person is crucial information.

You should have added your floorplan to sofia as outlined in Installation—either from a Vision migration or for clean sofia installs—or as outlined in Task 1 for new sofia Cloud users.

  1. Select sofia > Maps to display the site-level screen and expand the floorplan for the building of interest.

  2. Click the map to display a split screen of the map and a panel for specifying map settings.

  3. Scale the map to represent physical measurements.

This entails providing a singular dimension, preferably for a large wall, to allow sofia to determine all other floorplan dimensions.

    Scaling the Map
    1. Select Map Settings to show new buttons to replace the map or change its scale.

    2. Click Change Map Scale.
    3. Find the largest wall whose length you know and click on one end and then the other end.

Sofia places dots on the map to mark the wall’s endpoints and opens the Add Zone panel.

    4. At the Real Distance field, enter the length of the wall and select the units of measurement in the Unit field. Then click Add to record the distance and allow sofia to calculate the measurements for all other rooms in your floorplan.

      Sofia displays a verification message.

  4. Add a zone.

Adding a Zone to the Map
    1. Zoom the map and drag it to focus on the room where you want to add the zone.

    2. At the Zones tab, select Add Zone > Drag as Rectangle from the drop-down.

    3. Starting on a corner, drag the pointer diagonally to cover the area of the room.

As soon as you stop dragging, sofia presents the Add Zone panel.

    4. Enter a name for the zone, leave the Type field with the default Open, and click Confirm. (In our example, this is a meeting room called Saturn. So, we can label the zone the same.)

Sofia displays the map with the zone and its label listed in the Zones tab.

  5. Add a second zone just as you did in step 4.

In our example, we created a zone for a second meeting room across the way. We labeled this second zone after the name of the room, Jupiter Meeting Room.

  6. Add a zone group to serve as a container for the zones we created.

Zone groups are a convenient way to organize two or more individual zones that share a likeness. Later, when creating rules, you can set event conditions based on specific zones or zone groups.

    Adding a Zone Group
    1. Click Zone Groups and select Add Zone Group to display the corresponding panel.

    2. Enter a suitable name for the zones that you want to place in this group and click Add.

For our example, Meeting Rooms is appropriate. After clicking Add, sofia displays the new zone group. (Note that there are no members in this group yet.)

    3. Click the checkbox for the new group and select Add Zones to Group.

Sofia shows a tooltip above the map, instructing you how to select the zones to place in the group.

    4. Click each of the zones to include in the group. Then click anywhere outside in the map to register your selections. (In our example we selected the Saturn and Jupiter meeting rooms.)

Sofia displays a confirmation window to verify your selection.

    5. Click Confirm to verify the addition of the zones into the zone group.

Sofia displays a confirmation message that the zones are now part of the group.
    6. Click outside the confirmation panel to see that the Zone Group tab now shows there are two members in the zone group.

  7. Continue adding zones and zone groups to meet your location and tracking needs.

You are now ready to add infrastructure (the signal emitting-and-receiving equipment that will eventually connect to the tags in your assets or assigned to persons).
