Introduction

Rules are at the core of locating and tracking person, material assets, and workflows. You can set up any number of rules for a variety of purposes. For instance, here are examples of rule possibilities:

  • Area - To determine when an asset enters or leaves a designated area.
  • Dwell or Absence - To monitor the presence or absence of an asset after a predetermined time limit.
  • Par Level - To monitor the minimum or maximum number of assets allowed in a designated zone.

See Rules Inventory for descriptions of all the rules at your disposal. (Upcoming link.)

After creating any number of rules, you may apply them to selected assets by groups, departments, and locations. You can also determine what responses to trigger when the conditions for a rule are met. This is where event management comes in. You may monitor and manage events across all subscriptions or the subscription level. Managing events consists of acknowledging them and taking appropriate action per your organization's procedures and policies.

Note

For illustration purposes, this Part describes the creation of an Area rule in the Asset Tracking subscription. The rule informs us when a laptop leaves the zone group Meeting Rooms, which we created earlier in Part III.
